二、阅读理解(共 3 道试题,共 60 分。)
                                                              (A)
I hear many parents saying that their teen-age children are rebellion(反叛). I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out bravely on their own, most of them are trying to seize at one another’s hands for safety.
They say they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up crowded round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon (蚕茧) ---- into a larger cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly open up a teen –age market. These days every teenager can learn from newspapers and TV what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award(奖励) high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to great difficulty for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the difficulty is worth getting over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come --- with the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.

C. It is not necessarily bad for a teen-ager to disagree with his or her classmates.
D. Most teen-agers say they want to do what they like to, but in fact they are doing the same.

  Scientists Identify SARS Virus
Scientists say they have identified the virus that causes the mysterious, flu like illness Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.
Scientists say the corona virus(冠状病毒),now identified as the cause of SARS, is part of the same family of viruses that causes the common cold. However they say it is part of a distinct subgroup of corona viruses that do not have the same properties as the ordinary cold.
World Health Organization virologist Klaus Stohr said that with the identification of this corona virus, it could now be possible to develop more specific diagnostic tests for the disease.
“Now the research can be focused on this virus. The research will help us to develop new drugs,” he said. “Now we can focus on one pathogen which has been sequenced, which provides additional information for the development of tests. Now, one can perhaps think about a vaccine(疫苗) if need be. We are still, I think, optimistic that we can control the disease with the measures which have been carried out.”
SARS is spread by droplets through close personal contact. Symptoms include high fever, a dry cough and shortness of breath. About four percent of its victims die. The scientists say this virus has long existed in nature, but it has never been seen in humans before.
They say a new genetic sequencing of the SARS virus proves conclusively that it came from animals. A scientist at the U.S. Center for Disease Control, James Le Duc, says this is the first experience scientists have with this virus. Therefore, he says, a lot remains unknown.
“As you know, it is what we call a virgin soil outbreak,” Mr. Le Duc said. “It has never occurred in humans before. How it will progress, nobody really knows. But, it is most difficult to control diseases that are spread by droplets in this person to person spread. So, I think it would be premature(太早的) to suggest we are near the end of this outbreak.”

D. It has different properties from the ordinary cold.

3). From what Klaus Stohr said, it is known that____ .
A. the research has already stopped SARS from spreading

                                                            (C)
Some people seem to have a skill in learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary, master rules or grammar, and learn to write in the new more quickly than others. They do not seem to be any more intelligent(聪明的) than others, so what makes language learning so much easier for them ? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners we may discover a few of the techniques that make language learning easier for them.
First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher; they discover their own ways to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues (线索) and form their own conclusions (结论). When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes.
Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, they do not wait for a chance to use the language; they look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make mistakes. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what hear or to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.
Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people. They find it easy to practice using the language regularly(经常的) because they want to learn with it.
If your language learning has been less than successful, you might do well to try some of these techniques.
1). Successful language learners find it easy to practice using the language regularly because .
A. they can repeat what they hear or say strange things
B. they pick up and remember inexact or incomplete information
C. they are willing to make mistakes and try again
D. they want to learn with the language

2). The main idea of the third paragraph is that successful language learners .
A. always try to remember the meaning of every new word
B. are not afraid to make mistakes
C. are active in language learning
D. are willing to accept inexact or incomplete information

3). Successful language learners are not .
A. independent learners
B. always do some active learning
C. learning with a purpose
D. making no misake

4). What can be inferred from the text?
A. Successful language learners are cleverer.
B. Making mistakes is sometimes helpful.
C. The techniques of successful language learners seem easier to master.
D. Unsuccessful language learners are more interested in how to learn a language well.

5). The writer wrote this text in order to .
A. encourage language learners to use these techniques
B. explain why language is difficult to learn
C. compare language learning with other types of learning
D. help language learners to communicate with others
